Musique dans les Camps de Concentration

A touching website to the memory of musicians, performers and artists who fell victim to the holocaust  of the nazi concentration camps: Musique dans les Camps de Concentration.

In our collection we identified the following artists who died at Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Mauthausen, Sachsenhausen, Sobibor and Theresienstadt: Gyptis Akiba, Richard Fall, Armand Haagman, Marcel Lattès, Heinrich Mannfred, Casimir Oberfeld, Wilhelm Sterk, Gerrit Van Weezel, Friedrich Löwy (Beda), Meyer Streliski (Marcel Barger), Valentin Pinner (Harry Waldau), Wilhelm Julius (Willy Rosen), Georg Paul Morgenstern (Paul Morgan), Theodor Waldau (Wauwau), Fritz Grünbaum, Karel Hasler, Paul Wendel (Paul O’Montis), Mozes Hakkert (Max Hakkert), Thérese Wittman,  Erwin Grünspan (Erwin Wendelin Spahn) and Siegfried Salo (S. Translateur).

What a waste, what a shame.

  1. A powerfully moving post. One more artist who died at the hands of the Nazis, but who is not on the list, because he did not die in a concentration camp, was the composer Léon Jessel, a baptized Jew. According to Wikipedia, a house search in 1941 turned up a 1939 letter from him to his librettist in which he had written: “I cannot work in a time when hatred of Jews threatens my people with destruction, where I do not know when that gruesome fate will likewise be knocking at my door.” For the Nazis, this constituted the crime of spreading “atrocity stories”, and he was arrested. He was tortured by the Gestapo in the Alexanderplatz police prison in Berlin and died soon afterwards of the effects. He was then 70.

Jessel is probably best known today for the “March of the Toy Soldiers.” The sheet music cover for “Das Detektivmädel” can be found on this site. The artist was my grandfather, Wolfgang Ortmann (1885-1967), and the model was my grandmother, born Eva Löwenfeld (1895-1988). She was then about 24.

    1. Lieber Herr Peter Crane,
